Beverly Park playscape to be demolished
10-25-2009
Hey Everybody, It's nice to see people are taking action where regulating bodies have failed. How long ago was it that the US CPSC said there was no reason to bring in a ban of playstructures as CCA treated wood was being removed from the marketplace ? 2003 was the year and 1 million taxpayer dollars were spent to come to that decision. I can only imagine how many children have been left unprotected since that date. Take care everybody and please keep safe. deborah click on link for story
Antiques & Collectibles: Deck your porches
07-25-2009
Hey Everybody, As I read this article and learned that the outdoor furniture was made from pressure treated wood I shuttered. It is scary enough to think people are sitting on picnic tables made from treated wood but using it as lawn furniture would certainly increase the area of skin contact and is very dangerous. Please find out what your outdoor furniture is made from. Treated wood requires protection in handling and working with it. Linemen are told to protect their skin from it. Do you think you should be sitting on it? Take care everybody and please keep safe. Deborah
Greenhouse renovation brings return of Silver Lake plant sale
05-08-2009
Hey Everybody, As my list well knows it is very upsetting to me to see children or young adults being allowed to work with treated wood in a school or organization setting such as Boyscouts. People do not seem to yet be aware of the dangers and precautions needed when working with treated wood. I rather doubt the high schoolers were suited up with the proper protection and they likely wore the same clothing home to be washed with the household laundry. If cca wood was used the chemical reaction between aluminum and arsenic can form arsine gas which could build in the greenhouse. The chemical reaction between copper treated woods and aluminum will cause corrosion and could lead to the collapse of the structure. Where is our collective governments on protecting children and the consumer as a whole on the issue of treated wood? Take care everybody and please keep safe. deborah

Americas Watchdog Initiates A National Investigation Of Treated Wood Decking Material
04-07-2009
Americas Watchdog and its Homeowners Consumer Center is launching a national investigation into wood decking material. According to the group, "the treated wood decking material was suppose to prevent wood deterioration, and actually protect the deck for years. We are discovering that some wood decking material is deteriorating, and failing."
Edgewater’s Swings & Thangs Offers Rustic Luxury

My comments to the reporter Hello Robert, Pressure treated wood is not meant for this use and depending on which type he is using it may even be illegal. Treated wood should not come in contact with the skin and swings that conform to the body would be even more dangerous. Treated wood should not be in contact with people, most certainly not children, food or animals. I have attached a very old file for you to show you how long this has been known. Even the newer treatments that are heavily copper based after cca treated wood has banned from such use is not meant for such uses. Working with it alone requires a list of protection that clearly lets you see you should not being using it as outdoor furniture or swings. The newer treatments are even more toxic when wet, as the copper will leach in higher amounts. While he may be trying to make people happy he is likely causing low level long term poisoning that may rob them of their health and the odds are they will never figure out why. Copper is neurotoxic when taken in at above the minute amounts we need. Take care and keep safe Deborah Treated wood needs a full regime of safety measures when working with it. Wear a safety-approved HEPA mask, neoprene gloves designed to protect you from chemicals, arms should be covered with long sleeves, full pants, and footwear are all necessary. Eye protection is needed as well. All clothes must be washed separately and you should change before entering your home so you do not deposit the toxic sawdust on your carpets and furniture, which are especially dangerous in this easily breathable form. Never eat, drink, smoke or use the washroom without first washing after contact with treated wood.
Finished basements enhance whole home

My comment on treated wood basements to the newspaper is a quote. deborah "Little is known about the long-term effects of frequent exposure to wood preservatives. Some health studies have been carried out on workers in the wood preservation and lumber industry, and on people in the U.S.A. and in Europe living in houses containing preservative-treated wood Most of these studies showed only slight or no obvious effects on normal organ function and on health. However, some workers and handimen heavily exposed to preservative chemicals, and some people living in dwellings heavily treated with wood preservatives or with both wood preservatives and insecticides, have become seriously ill and died." from April 1991 Pressure-treated (Preserved) Wood and Wood Preservatives is one of a series of Health Protection Branch Issues produced by the Health Protection Branch of Health and Welfare Canada for the public, media, and special interest groups interested in health protection in Canada. Bad advise on fixing a treated wood problem
03-16-2009
Hey Everybody, Have I mentioned how angry I get when I hear someone giving advice who has no idea of what they are talking about. There is more than one person on my list who was poisoned just the way this man is directing this woman. Please check with more than one source no matter what home project you are taking up because I see this kind of thing all the time. Take care and please keep safe. Deborah Here is my comment to the paper It is very dangerous to sand, powerwash or use any chemical cleaners on treated wood. A trip to the EPA will clearly point that out. Treated wood that is wet is extremely dangerous as it means that the bonding process was not completed before it left the treating plant. No one should purchase wet treated wood. It is not water that is coming out. Treated wood is placed in a vacuum and all the water is removed before the chemicals are pressurized into the wood. If it is wet it is leaking toxins not water. Be safe deborah

Treated-wood woes
03-15-2009
The right stuff Selecting building materials is vital to sustainable design because of the environmental impacts associated with processing and transportation. Actually seeing how products are made might make us reconsider using them in our green buildings and homes. Otto von Bismarck, a 19th-century aristocrat, once said, “The less people know about how sausages and laws are made, the better they’ll sleep at night.” He’s right, but in my experience pressure-treated wood and particle board should be added to his list (although I’m glad I know the whole story). Pressure treatment is a chemical process in which wood is placed inside a closed cylinder. Vacuum and pressure are then applied to force preservatives into it. The chemicals help protect the wood from termites, other insects and fungal decay.

Arsenic Exposure May Be a Risk Factor for Alzheimer’s Disease
02-14-2009
To the Editor: Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, manifested by cognitive and memory deficits that impair daily activities and cause a variety of psychiatric and behavioral disturbances.1 Many risk factors have been proposed, which, due to some cellular and subcellular mechanisms, finally lead to brain nerve apoptosis.
Treated wood not allowed to be cut on property
02-13-2009
Hey Everyone, While this may seem like just another zoning application I noticed something. While Mr. Davenport did receive his zoning permit he had to agree to never cut treated wood on the property. It is wonderful to see the people are starting to wake up to the environmental dangers from using treated wood and protecting their communities. I am always up for some good news. Do you really want your child and those you love on treated wood? Take care and please keep safe. Deborah
Tests: Runoff from Koppers contains chemicals
01-01-2009
Hey Everybody, This article is a perfect example of the games industry has played skirting government legislation that has little teeth or little will to protect the environment, people and wildlife surrounding this Superfund/working Industry site. Dancing with the devil might be a better description of asking industry to forgo ethics for safety. In this New Year we have hope that a new government in the U.S.A. and a new President is as disturbed as we are by such blatant disregard for our planet. We are also counting on the introduction of new laws to protect and also to punish those who have committed what should be deemed crimes not business transactions. Take care everybody and please keep safe. Deborah Tests: Runoff from Koppers contains chemicals By Megan Rolland Staff writer Published: Thursday, January 1, 2009 at 6:01 a.m. Last Modified: Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at 10:02 p.m. Local officials are concerned that rain water running off the Koppers wood-treatment facility near N. Main Street may be carrying arsenic and copper into Gainesville's creeks.
