Chemical sensitivity: It’s a ‘bizarre existence’
12-10-2008
There are two things Joan Walz says people usually notice about her. The first is her bright red hair. The second: her purple gas mask. Without the latter, she says, “it’s hold your breath and run.” Walz suffers from Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), sometimes referred to as Environmental Illness, which renders those in its grasp susceptible to the most basic of household and societal chemicals. Darting through parking lots to avoid car exhaust, eschewing cigarette smoke and skirting past the aromas of perfumes, dryer sheets and building materials, to name a few, is a part of what Walz describes as a “bizarre existence” for those with MCS.
David Thompson Health Region Establishes Hospital Procedure for Multiple Chemical Sensitivity
11-29-2008
Mabel, an acute care manager, recently worked hard to establish a protocol for the care of multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) hospital patients in the Alberta, Canada area. MCS is an acquired and progressive neurological disease induced by exposure to chemical and fragrance products. Hospital cleaning products, sanitizers, and floor wax are common incitants. Staff, patient, and visitor fragrances, lotions, and scented laundry products are another challenge. Hospitals should be medically safe and accessible for patients and staff; however, this has been evasive in the past.

Judge allows civil suit over co-worker's perfume
11-27-2008
DETROIT---A federal judge says a Detroit city employee can proceed with a civil suit claiming she couldn't work because of a co-worker's strong perfume. The Detroit News says U.S. District Judge Lawrence Zatkoff determined Susan McBride has a potential claim under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The city is asking to have the suit dismissed.
Researchers Target Lymphatic System Cause Behind Many Diseases
11-26-2008
Just as the currents of a river run through the mountains and valleys to cleanse out the landscape, the body's internal waterways made up of lymphatic fluids function as a "river of health," cleansing the body by carrying away accumulated wastes and foreign invaders. This powerful cleansing aqueduct is actually twice as large as there are twice as many lymph vessels as there are blood vessels. The lymphatic system is the body's first line of defense against disease. As the body's internal cleansing waterway, it plays an indispensible role in immunity and in the body's immune surveillance against cancer. When immune surveillance fails, cancer grows and spreads (metastasizes), and inflammatory diseases like fibromyalgia , lupus, arthritis, and shingles progress into incapacitating disorders.
Chemicals causing fragrance can be dangerous
11-26-2008
HAVE you noticed that when you walk into stores like Bed Bath and Beyond or Pier 1, the smell from their scented candles and potpourri is overwhelming? Have you noticed that air fresheners, dryer sheets or heavily scented washing machine soap have a potent aroma? Have you ever stopped to think what is in these products that cause strong fragrances? The answer is that the odors are produced by a soup of chemicals, and some of these compounds may not be very good for you.

MCS Health Matters
05-02-2005
When I first had to stop working because of MCS I put together an article entitled "MCS Health Matters" to educate others on this illness. The nurse at work promised to distribute it around the plant but I learned later that she never did and that nobody at work had ever seen it. I have recently tweaked it and thought I would send it out to anyone who may have use for it. Feel free to use it as you wish. At the Allergy and Environmental Health Association Quebec (AEHAQ), we continue to be greatly concerned by the escalating epidemic of preventable Environmental Illness (EI)[1] and injury from exposure to environmental and chemical toxins. EI encompasses illnesses such as Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).
