Pink Lake

This is a picture of Pink Lake in the Gatineau Park. The whole park is a place of greaty beauty with many trails where you can walk through some of the most beautiful country in Canada. Pink Lake is one of the attractions there and on my first visit there last weekend, Saturday October 25th I learned the cca wood is leaching at this site also. I am sure that what I found is echoed in parks around the world and I am not trying to centre out any place but this is where I was and my daughter took photos. This first picture is a shot of Pink Lake not pointing out anything to do with the wood.

this shot is of a parking lot at Pink Lake and you can clearly see the cca running down the cement posts that support the cca railing.
CCA leaching at outlook

this is a picture of one of the outlooks above Pink Lake. The cca is oozing out of the wood. The day was a drizzling one which produces ideal conditions for the leaching of arsenic from the wood. This could easily be picked up by children and adults alike and then tracked into their vehicles. Pets which are not allowed in the park but can be spotted everywhere could easily lick this up as arsenic is a salt and is attractive to anaimals.
cca leaching at lookout site

Here is another picture of cca leaching from the lookout above Pink Lake. Recent studies on cca wood by Dr David Stiwell show that chemicals leaching from the wood vary from day to day and the older the wood gets does not ensure safer levels. This day the wood was obviously leaching a great deal. Environments such as this one which is our government is trying to be preserve is a bad place for cca wood or any copper based wood as well. Copper in particular is dangerous to aquatic life and this has been well document by Judith Weis. Some lakes have also been shown to have gotten over half there arsenic from cca wood docks etc.
Pink lake in all it's splendor

Here is another shot of pink lake to end on a more positive note. I reported the leaching of cca wood to the proper authorities today as well as sending them these pictures and they were quite interested in what I had found. Hopefully this situation will be looked after to protect a very enchanted place. Check out the link to the Fall show for more pictures of Gatineau Park.
