CANADA H1H-1Y1
by Rebecca Simms of the Debating Team of Western Kentucky University

My title is speech individual events coach at Western Kentucky University. Rebecca is a student at Western and a competitor on the speech and debate, or forensics team. There are four types of public address speaking events that our team competes in, as well as a number of dramatic interpretation events. The four speaking events are informative speaking, where a competitor informs an audience on a particular subject; after dinner speaking, where a competitor uses humor to either inform or persuade an audience; rhetorical criticism, which takes a communicative/persuasive act and analyzes its effectiveness; and persuasive speaking, where a competitor informs the audience of a problem, discusses why the problem is occuring, and offers solutions. Rebecca's speech falls under this last category. Over the year, she has competed at nearly 20 different competitions all over the nation with this speech, being seen by a total of probably 300-500 different people. We fly all around the country nearly every weekend for competition, so the word about the dangers of CCA is being spread. At the national tournament this weekend, I estimate that at least another 50 will see it, much more than that if she makes it to the final round. Please distribute her speech to anyone who it can help! It's only through awareness that people can begin to take action. Just thought I'd drop you a line and let you know how Rebecca did this weekend. She broke into the semi final round of the National Forensic Association national tournament. A very big honor. That means that out of about 250 competitors from around the nation in persuasive speaking, she was among the top 12. A very big honor!
