DEC Proposes Rule Change To Eliminate Open Burning
05-07-2008
In an effort to reduce the impacts of pollutants such as dioxins, particulate matter and carbon monoxide and to limit the risks of wildfires, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is proposing to extend the ban on open burning statewide. Open burning of residential wastes in any city or village, or in any town with a population of 20,000 or more has been prohibited since 1972.

Hey Everybody, I have an update for you on the below story. Shirley Brandie and I are fast becoming good friends and I would like to introduce you to her website where she has kept an excellent log of the containation her family has suffered along with the pictures of what her neighbor has been burning. Very similar to my families story. http://woodburnersmoke.net So please check it out. If you have any data to back her case then please contact her at s.brandie@sympatico.ca Please remember her family in your thoughts and prayers Take care everybody and please keep safe. Deborah
Fate of Cu, Cr, and As during combustion of impregnated wood with and without peat additive
09-01-2007
Hey Everybody, Although they may have achieved a small measure of success by burning cca treated wood with peat added the results would still be disastrous to health and the environment. As the summer season approaches I want to remind you of the very real concerns with burning treated wood. I often hear from people saying that bonfires are often made from this wood because of the pretty colors when ignited and that children love the look of it. Look below at the percentages of the metals found in the emissions and then please remember that 1 12-foot, 2 by 6 piece of wood contains enough arsenic (one ounce), to kill two hundred and fifty people. Also one tablespoon of this ash can kill a 150-lb human being if ingested. This is just referring to the dangers of the arsenic alone not even considering the hexavalent chromium or the copper. There are other chemicals and metals present in cca wood as well. Please do not burn any treated wood. Take care everybody and please keep safe. deborah
Emissions of chromium, copper, arsenic, and PCDDs/Fs from open burning
11-01-2005
Hi Everybody, My home was tested with the very sophisticated Niton Corporation portable X-Ray Fluorescence Analyser and it was found to be it very contaminated. A scientist did the testing on my home with this hand held computer. It was not done by any government agency that we had sought help from. This scientist gave us the opportunity to clean up our environment and we owe him a great debt of gratitude. We gave these results to governments in several countries in hope of such a study. This is a validation of everything I have been saying since I began writing my reports in 2000 and I believe this scientists results likely lead to this study. Now the world owes him a debt of gratitude for having the compassion to answer my call for help. It certainly should be enough proof to outlaw the burning of cca wood and help us all realize that we must quit making products that we can not safely dispose of and that put health and the environment at serious risk. Take care everybody and please keep safe. Deborah

Increased PCDD/F formation in the bottom ash from fires of CCA-treated wood.

Comparable levels of PCDD/Fs would be expected in residual ash from burning CCA-treated wood in backyard fires, stoves and wood heaters, as a consequence of similar combustion conditions.

Beach Fire Rings Tested For Toxic Metals
07-02-2004
Testing was started Friday at several beach and campground sites with fire rings in Santa Cruz County for arsenic, chromium and other metals. In all, five beach sites and two campground sites were tested by the Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District. A citizens group -- Friends of the Harbor -- did its own testing in May and said it discovered high levels of arsenic next to a fire ring on Twin Lakes Beach. That caught the attention of state and local officials.
Tests Confirm Toxins In Beach Fire Rings
07-02-2004
Health officials in Santa Cruz confirmed Tuesday that high levels of arsenic, copper and chromium have been found at Twin Lakes Beach. Toxic levels of the substances were found at two fire ring sites. At one site, tests showed levels about 70,000 parts per million. At the other site, the test measured 20,000 parts per million.
