Please help fight for the rights of those with chemical injury and sensitivity
At the Allergy and Environmental Health Association Quebec (AEHAQ), we continue to be greatly concerned by the escalating epidemic of preventable Environmental Illness (EI)[1] and injury from exposure to environmental and chemical toxins. EI encompasses illnesses such as Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).
According to a study[2] published in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Health Perspectives, more than 12% of the population of industrialized countries suffers from MCS. This is a condition where sufferers experience severe adverse reactions from even low-level exposures to commonly used chemicals. Most of these are neuro-toxic and are now widespread in our society and almost impossible to avoid.
EI can strike at any time. The symptoms which are always debilitating result in severe disability and require a complete change in lifestyle. Since this is poorly understood by the medical community and as there are no treatment centers in most of Canada, EI sufferers struggle to have their basic human rights respected. EI almost always results in a loss of employment, housing and at times, even the loss of family members who do not understand the illness. Personal relationships suffer and there have been instances of suicide due to the despair this causes.
AEHAQ understands and encourages the need for research to find out more about this illness. However, care must be provided without delay for those who have been injured. We need members of society who are not ill to support us. Please fill in the petitions below and stand up for us.
Your actions will result in a cleaner toxin-free environment that will benefit your loved ones and yourself and aid in the prevention of illness.
